Wow. Seems like the old saying, “May you live in interesting times” has really taken the world by storm. The roaring twenties have a new meaning for most of us now. We are only halfway through the year and have been witness to and participated in so much change already.
The Last Gameboard was created to help facilitate change. We are building community and connection between human beings. When we are in a community, our differences don’t seem so large; we are happier and healthier. We aren’t just building a consumer appliance or “a better mousetrap”. We are building an ecosystem to help better the future.
This future is far from straightforward. Where others have failed at this seemingly Sisyphean task, we have made tremendous progress and are excited to bring you Gameboard-1. Yes, COVID19 has impacted our schedule, but it has also provided us with the ability to make use of some incredible new technology that will make Gameboard-1 ten times better.
COVID19 hit us like a sucker punch. We had just come off great shows at CES and Pax South and were incredibly excited to meet so many of you! We were generating a lot of waves in the technology industry, getting courted by venture capital firms and were bracing for the rocket ship to launch!
Overnight, everything paused. Starting with SXSW, show after show cancelled. Venture capital firms pulled back to focus on flailing companies in their portfolio. We were isolated from our lab and unable to carry out critical R&D. We were all social distancing in our homes desperately wishing we could play and socialize on Gameboard-1. Moreover, knowing that COVID19 was impacting supply chains and our production schedule with it.
When supply chains and manufacturing facilities go dark, the big fish get preferential treatment. We are talking not just Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X, but also the millions of smartphones and tablets manufactured every year. As such, we knew we were going to be impacted but were originally unable to quantify by how long. As most of the manufacturing is being done in China, this has put us in a challenging situation.
So we decided to make the best of a bad situation.
We had previously identified a new technology that will take the tabletop gaming experience to a truly unprecedented level. This technology was coming to the market too late for the original production schedule of Gameboard-1. With the COVID19 delay, we now have the ability to bring it to you at launch!
This new technology enables an incredible user experience through extremely low latency, expanded 3D touch, player recognition/authentication, object recognition (without NFC/RFID), cardrecognition, and gameboard surface powering of passive and active game pieces. It is everything we wanted, but better and more.
This also means we have some rework to do. As such we are releasing alpha access to our SDK to our trusted developers and developer backers next week. We will continue to build out the SDK to make use of all of the added functionality.
WHAT IT MEANS FOR OUR BACKERS
This does mean a delay of your Gameboard-1. Based on the impact of COVID19 and our decision to make use of this new technology, please see the schedule below:
This schedule will be updated regularly to show releases of all tiers. For those of you who have reserved Gameboard, we will be offering you a discounted code & order details later this summer.
We know this is not what you wanted to hear. You have trusted us with your early investment and we will not let you down. We ask for your trust and continued investment in our community. As things get back to normal post-COVID19, we will be able to bring you more consistent updates to showcase the technology as well as the many excited game partners that have signed up for Gameboard-1!
Thank you for your continued support and we can’t wait to bring you more!
